The Sequoya Library is open! See pictures of the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting ceremony on December 8.
The "old" Sequoya still hasn't been demolished, but the "new" Sequoya will open soon! Due to a delayed lighting fixture, the library could not open this week as tentatively planned. Installation of the lighting fixture should take place next week, then the building must be inspected by the City of Madison before it can open to the public. While our actual opening date isn't yet known, our Grand Opening date is already set for Monday, December 8 from 4:30 - 6 p.m. Mark it on your calendars to help us celebrate just in time for the holidays!
On Tuesday, November 11 at 5:30 p.m., the Madison Public Library Foundation, Inc. will present a check for more than $1,000,000 to the Madison City Council. This represents the private sector contributions promised for the Sequoya Branch Library.
The Sequoya Branch Capital Campaign began in 2006 with an overall fundraising goal of $975,000. Wisconsin First Lady Jessica Doyle, a former long-time resident of the Westmorland neighborhood, served as the Campaign Committee's honorary chair. Through many events, including appearances by many well-loved local authors, and through neighborhood and corporate donations, the Capital Campaign exceeded its goal. Major donors, such as the Madison Community Foundation, will be recognized on the library's pillars as "Pillars of the Community." Capital Campaign Committee Chairs are Gary Poulson and Jean MacCubbin, both former alder persons who represented most neighborhoods in the immediate area of the Sequoya Branch.
Sneak a peek inside the new Sequoya with "under construction" photos on our Flickr photosharing account. You can even see a few panoramic video clips of the inside of the library. The new library is a departure from the decor of our other recently remodeled libraries in that it has a more structural feel, with some exposed elements and a brighter color palette. Sequoya construction also incorporated many "green" elements such as natural/renewable materials and finishes, and greywater (recycled water) toilet flushing system. The new library will feature signage highlighting some of the green features.
Our new address will be 4340 Tokay Boulevard. Our phone number will remain 266-6385.
The Sequoya Branch will close to the public at 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 4 in order to prepare for the demolition of the current mall on October 13. The new library will open in mid-November 2008. See photos of the construction, and stay tuned for more information.
