A very sweet story indeed

A review of Magic Candies by Baek Heena, translated by Sophie Bowman

Baek Heena is one of Korea’s most famous picture book authors and artists. She grew up with a vivid imagination and her inner child shines through in her books. She makes a conscious effort in her artwork and storytelling to show the perspectives and emotions of children. You’ll definitely get a sense of awe along with a few giggles reading this book.

Magic Candies is about a lonely little boy named Tong Tong who eats hard candies that look like marbles. With each tasting, Tong Tong experiences different sensations and moods. He can hear inanimate objects like the sofa complaining about how the remote is stuck, hurting its side. He also has a really good conversation with his dog, aptly named Marbles, too. With each candy, he listens and sees things beyond the norm. It IS magical!

Ms. Baek skillfully captures and creates emotions with her life-like handmade miniature figurines and scenery. You’ll be engrossed in the realistic details, certain to bring on great conversations with a little one or your inner child. I look forward to translations of her other books, especially the prequel featuring Tong Tong’s dog.

Life is like a box of chocolates? Not necessarily. Sometimes all you need is a bag of magic candies.
