Donna Seaman's "Core Collection: New and Innovative Black History" in the current Booklist is just in time for Black History Month. It's always nice when someone else puts together an excellent reading list. There are biographies, family histories, memoirs, histories, women's stories and I hope that you can find one (or more) that stimulates your interest. I know I have.
"Every year around 27 January, UNESCO pays tribute to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to counter antisemitism, racism, and other forms of intolerance that may lead to group-targeted violence. The date marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau by Soviet troops on 27 January 1945.
Recently the National Book Foundation announced the 2021 Finalists for the National Book Awards. According to their website "the mission of the National Book Foundation is to celebrate the best literature in America, expand its audience, and ensure that books have a prominent place in American culture." The categories include Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Translated Literature, Young People's Literature.
The fall sports season has started and what better way to start it with a top 10 list from Booklist. The latest is for new sports books. This diverse list includes books about polo in the inner city, tennis stars, soccer players, a woman boxer, football in WWII, and Victorian spiritualists. Are there any titles that you would add?
"The American Book Awards were created to provide recognition for outstanding literary achievement from the entire spectrum of America’s diverse literary community. The purpose of the awards is to recognize literary excellence without limitations or restrictions. There are no categories, no nominees, and therefore no losers. The award winners range from well-known and established writers to under-recognized authors and first works.
The Dayton Literary Peace Prize finalists have been announced. The award "celebrates the power of literature to promote peace, social justice, and global understanding." On September 22nd a winner and runner-up in both fiction and nonfiction categories will be announced. The 2021 finalists are:

Booklist puts out many top 10 lists. Below is the current one for memoirs. They include facing serious illness, family struggles, family tragedies, racism.
The following article in Booklist caught my eye: "Trend Alert: Memoirs in Essays". A memoir in essay is a "book-length collection of linked essays, centered on an author's self or life" according to this article from LitHub (which also has some good title suggestions). So I decided to do some more exploring. Below are some books from the article as well as other titles that I discovered along the way.
As I've mentioned in the past, Booklist does many annual top 10 lists. Today I ran across their new one for biographies with a focus on trailblazers who changed the world.
National Poetry Month was launched by the Academy of American Poets to remind "the public that poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters." To help myself (and you) out I've put together some lists of poetry from last year and some new titles from the the first quarter of this year. This is the last of four lists. Let's read some poetry!
