You know, dear readers, that when you’re excited for the titles the didn’t fit on the anticipated titles list as well as those that did, it’s going to be a good month for reading. September sees the start of the big fall publishing season, when publishers release their heavyweight titles in anticipation of the holiday and award seasons. This September is no exception. Here are some highlights:
--It may be hard to believe, but it’s been almost a year since the presidential election. There have been accounts of the campaign already, but Hillary Rodham Clinton’s What Happened is sure to get a fair amount of critical notice for obvious reasons. According to press releases, it is being called her ‘most candid memoir’ yet and promises to delve into what Clinton experienced as the first female major party candidate in one of the wildest elections ever. Unbelievable: My Front Row Seat to the Craziest Campaign in History offers NBC correspondent Katy Tur’s experiences in the Trump campaign press corps and as a particular target of Trump’s ire. Both Clinton and Tur’s books are due out on September 12.
--History buffs! September sees releases covering topics as disparate as Adam and Eve, the Dunkirk evacuation, America in Vietnam and the woman who could be called the mother of the NSA. Nonfiction readers can savor renowned cook Alice Waters’ memoir Coming to My Senses, follow self-help guru Brene Brown’s Braving the Wilderness, orgive ear to Stephen Colbert’s Midnight Confessions.
--Fall is perfect for digging into a good meaty literary novel in preparation for book award season. Previous National Book Award winners James McBride and Jessmyn Ward are releasing a story collection and novel respectively, while Booker Award winner Salman Rushdie comes out with The Golden House early in the month. Ken Follett’s mammoth medieval-set trilogy Pillars of the Earth comes to a close with A Column of Fire, while Sarah Miller reopens another chapter of history in Caroline: Little House Revisited.
