Vote at Madison Public Library for the November 2020 Presidential Election

Madison Public Library is honored to partner with the City of Madison Clerk's Office once again to provide a location for voter registration, in-person absentee voting, and election day voting in 2024. We will be updating this page as information changes and in-person absentee voting dates are set. Always check the City Clerk's website and social media for the most up-to-date information.

Please note that libraries can not answer many voting questions. Please call the City Clerk's office at 608-266-4601 with questions related to voting and the election.

Election Day

The 2024 General Election will take place Tuesday, November 5. You MUST VOTE AT YOUR POLLING LOCATION on election day, and note that many polling places have changed since the last election. Find your polling place 

Seven Madison Public Library locations that will serve as polling places on Tuesday, November 5:

  • Alicia Ashman Library
  • Central Library
  • Hawthorne Library
  • Lakeview Library
  • Meadowridge Library
  • Pinney Library
  • Sequoya Library

Polling places will be open from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Election day. If you are in line to vote at 8 p.m., you will be allowed to cast your ballot. At locations serving as polling places on election day, Madisonians can register to vote, return absentee ballots and vote in person. Voter Registration

 You can register to vote at In Person Absentee Voting sites with City Clerk officials leading up to and on Election Day except for during the three days prior to Election Day (Tuesday, November 5). You can also register to vote online, at the Clerk's office, and at the library throughout the year with certain exceptions.

In-Person Absentee Voting

In-Person Absentee Voting (IPAV) takes place in the City of Madison from October 22 - November 3. All Madison Public Library locations are serving as early voting locations but dates and times vary by location. Please check the information listed below before traveling: 

Alicia Ashman Library, 733 N High Point Rd

  • 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. weekdays, October 22 - November 1
  • 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturdays, October 26 & November 2

Central Library, 201 W Mifflin St

  • 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. weekdays, October 22 – November 1
  • 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturdays, October 26 & November 2
  • 2-4 p.m. Sundays, October 27 & November 3

Goodman South Madison Library, 2222 S Park St

  • 11 a.m.  – 7 p.m. weekdays, October 22 – November 1
  • 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturdays, October 26 & November 2
  • 2-4 p.m. Sundays, October 27 & November 3

Hawthorne Library, 2707 E Washington Ave

Monroe Street Library, 1705 Monroe St

  • 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays October 22 - November 1
  • 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday, October 28
  • 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturdays, October 26 & November 2

PLEASE NOTE: Monroe Street Library isn't open on Thursdays, and In-Person Absentee Voting doesn't begin until Tuesday, October 22.

Pinney Library, 516 Cottage Grove Rd

  • 11 a.m.  – 7 p.m. weekdays, October 22 – November 1
  • 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturdays, October 26 & November 

Sequoya Library, 4340 Tokay Blvd

  • 11 a.m.  – 7 p.m. weekdays, October 22 – November 1
  • 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturdays, October 26 & November 2

People can register to vote ON SITE when voting absentee in-person. Voters who need to register due to a recent move or name change will also need to show an acceptable proof of address document. Registration will not be available on November 2 & 3 because registration is not allowed the three days before an election.

Absentee Ballot Return

Below are the ways you can return your absentee ballot to libraries:

  • You can return your absentee ballot to city clerk staff during the hours of in-person absentee voting. Voters will not be able to drop off their absentee ballots at the library outside of in-person absentee hours. 
  • Voters can return absentee ballots to Ballot Drop Boxes available around the city until 5 p.m. the day before the election. 
  • On election day, you must return your absentee ballot to your polling place. If the library is your polling place, clerk staff will accept absentee ballots on November 5 (General Election Day) from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. You can look up your polling place online.

Key Election Dates

Here's a list of key dates to be aware of during the 2024 General Election: 

  • September 17, 2024: National Voter Registration Day
  • September 19, 2024: Absentee Ballots Mailed to voters with requests on file. Track the status of your absentee at https://MyVote.wi.gov
  • September 20, 2024: Drop Boxes Open
  • October 8, 2024: Last Day to Establish Residency. Voters who move after today won’t be eligible to vote at their new address. They need to vote from their previous address.
  • October 16, 2024: Online and Mail Voter Registration Closes. Final day to register to vote online or through the mail.
  • October 22, 2024: In-Person Absentee Voting Begins.
  • October 26, 2024: Public Test. City Clerk’s Office tests election equipment to ensure accurate results.
  • October 28, 2024: Mail It Back Monday. Voters returning absentees via mail should do so by today.
  • October 31, 2024: Absentee via Mail Request Deadline for most voters, but Post Office might not deliver by Tuesday.
  • November 1, 2024: Final In-Person Voter Registration at Absentee Sites. Voters may still register at the polls on Election Day.
  • November 3, 2024: Final Day of In-Person Absentee Voting
  • November 5, 2024: Election Day. Polls open 7 a.m. and remain open until 8 p.m. Election results are posted on County Clerk’s website.
  • November 8, 2024: Provisional Deadline. Provisional voters have until 4 p.m. to get a copy of their ID to the Clerk’s Office.
