One more gig

A review of Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames

Kings of the Wyld has a Band of old, fat and worn out men getting together for one last tour. Only this is a band of mercenaries once known as Saga and the tour is a trek across the realm battling monsters, magicians, crooks and other mercenaries along the way. Their quest? Defeat a horde of thousands of monsters to reach a besieged city and rescue the daughter of one of the members. Easy, peasy, right?

When former band leader Gabriel shows up on the doorstep of Clay Cooper, he knows it can't be good. Gabriel is worn down and somehow so much smaller than he was in the past, but he's on a mission. His daughter Rose, who took up the mercenary life herself, is trapped in a city that is surrounded by that horde. It's only a matter of time before the city is overrun and everyone within dies, but that doesn't matter to Gabrial. He thinks if he can gather Saga back together, they can do the impossible and rescue Rose. Clay is less convinced and he's happy in his quieter life with a beloved wife and daughter. Even so, he can't turn down his former mercenary mate. He also knows the only way this has any chance at all is if they reunite with the rest of the band so that they can take on the task together.

This is grimdark fantasy with a sharp, witty edge and I found myself laughing almost as much as I was wincing in anxiety for the characters. There's also a lot of heart in relationships between the men and the people they've gained in their lives along the way. Great stuff.
