Butterflies mean excitement

Cover of Piper Chen Sings
A review of Piper Chen Sings by Phillipa Soo and Maris Pasquale Doran
Qin Leng

Piper Chen loves singing. She sings to the moon and the stars. She sings to her dog and the birds and the frogs. She dances and drums her way through her world.

Then one day, Piper's music teacher makes her an offer that thrills her and scares her at the same time: a solo at the school's Spring Sing. Piper says YES! and then is immediately overcome with butterflies in her belly that do not feel good. Piper's Nǎi Nai recognizes that something is wrong, and they talk about Piper's fears. Nǎi Nai relates her own experiences overcoming fears and thinking about the butterflies in a new, positive way. By the time the Spring Sing arrives, Piper is back to her regular, musical self with colorful, blooming butterflies all around.

Written by Phillipa Soo, the Grammy winner and Tony-nominated actress from Hamilton, and Maris Pasquale Doran, a licensed clinical social worker and private psychotherapist, this picture book shares what it's like to have music at the center of your world while also recognizing the feelings that go along with performing in front of others and how to face fears in general.  Piper's Nǎi Nai is understanding and patient and helps Piper build confidence and courage. Piper's music teacher is also helpful and kind. The moment when Piper takes control of her butterflies is magical and feels very real.

Qin Leng's ink, watercolor and oil pastel illustrations beautifully capture a child experiencing joy, sadness, and joy again in a safe, supportive environment with trusted adults. The book also includes a glossary and pronunciation guide for the Mandarin Chinese used throughout. Perfect for sharing with kids experiencing jitters for the first time.
