Don't miss these new fall-themed picture books that showcase the season:
Autumn written by Muscogee poet Alexander Posey and illustrated by Paige Pettibone captures the sights and sounds of the transition from later summer to a fall afternoon as experienced by a little girl wrapped in a warm blanket. The golden sun, a jaybird in the sky, and the fluttering scarlet leaves beautifully portray the changing of the season and bright fall colors. The end notes include information about Alexander Posey and includes the full text of the poem.
It's Fall written and illustrated by Renée Kurilla shows the many ways to welcome and celebrate the season of fuzzy socks, cozy sweaters and scarves, leaves, pumpkins and cider donuts. A teacher asks the class what things they love about this time of year and the answers are honest and familiar with illustrations to match the corn mazes and apple picking, honking geese and whipped cream on holiday pies. This is the perfect conversation starter for little ones to share what they love most about this time of year.
A Mischief of Mice written and illustrated by Christie Matheson is a nature-inspired mystery that utilizes the spooky elements of the fall season. A mischief of mice plays in the woods until one dusk they disappear. The other woodland creatures gather amid the falling leaves and acorns to ponder the situation. Included in the group are a gaze of raccoons, a clutter of spiders, an unkindness of ravens, a cauldron of bats and more groups of animals with unique name identifiers. Many of these group names were new to me and I'm sure will be a puzzle for other readers to decode and discuss. It's a delight to see the animals working together in the fall night to solve the mystery, which ends in a cozy, comforting way. Included at the end of the book is a glossary, or collection of collective nouns. Clever and timely!
