Meeting Rooms A and B Combined
Wednesday, Sep 18, 2024, 4:30pm to 6:30pm

School-age children (elementary and middle school) are invited to join us for this kid-led Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Be a part of an adventuring party where you'll use your imagination and creativity to explore a fantasy world in an epic quest. Our Dungeon Master Jared will provide support and help guide campaigns along with our adult D&D experts and our Youth Librarian Ruth.

This weekly session is for beginners.

About D&D: Dungeons and Dragons is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game that allows each player to create their own character to play. These characters embark upon imaginary adventures within a fantasy setting. A Dungeon Master (DM) serves as the game's referee and storyteller, while maintaining the setting in which the adventures occur.

From its humble origins in phone trees and voice assistants, to today's innovations such as ChatGPT and Llama, natural language processing (NLP) is a fast-moving field with wide-ranging real-world applications. Yet it's also often shrouded in an air of complexity and exclusivity. How can you work in the field of NLP and language AI without a PhD? In this talk, Julia shares her own experience from nearly a decade in the field. She presents her past consumer-facing projects, highlights key concepts and challenges, and outlines skills and opportunities across various industry job roles.

SPEAKER

Julia Kroll is an Applied Engineer at Deepgram, where she blends her expertise in engineering and product to advise users in building language AI. Her work has focused on multi-lingual AI, voice assistants, and cloud computing. Her interests lie at the intersection of technology, linguistics, and society.

Book Discussion of Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World by Henry Grabar

Conference Room 104
Wednesday, Sep 18, 2024, 7:00pm to 8:30pm

‘Convenient, available and free’ is what every car owner wants regarding parking. But then there’s the parking-driven psychosis; a citizenry that is underhoused yet overparked; and communities that set parking minimums for apartment buildings that ultimately keep lower income units from being built. A perfect read for development obsessed Madison! Join us for discussion and perhaps dessert. Newcomers warmly welcomed.
