The Grey Zone

Directed by Tim Blake Nelson.  Performances by David Arquette, Steve Buscemi, Harvey Keitel, Mira Sorvino, Natasha Lyonne. Lions Gate Films, 2001. Rated R. 109 minutes.  Drama / History / War.

Based on actual events, "The Grey Zone" is the staggeringly powerful story of the Auschwitz's twelfth Sonderkommando -- one of the thirteen consecutive "Special Squads" of Jewish prisoners placed by the Nazis in the excruciating moral dilemma of helping to exterminate fellow Jews in exchange for a few more months of life. From inside the working organs of the infamous Auschwitz death camp, this film asks to what terrible lengths we are willing to go to save our own lives.

About River Food Pantry & Munch Truck

Launched in 2016, Munch(link is external) is our mobile meals program that delivers free healthy meals to children and adults in over a dozen low-income neighborhoods throughout Madison. Each meal contains a sandwich or main menu item, a fruit or vegetable, a grain, a treat, and a drink. Everyone is welcome to take home a free meal. No registration or ID is required.

Neighborhoods served by Munch have large populations of children eligible for free school lunch. To bridge the gap that exists when school lunch is not available, Munch operates up to 6 days per week, Monday–Saturday, any time school cafeterias are closed (including breaks and periods of remote learning).

For any questions or comments, please contact the Munch staff at munch@riverfoodpantry.org(link sends e-mail) or (608) 661-1223.

Rugs for Your Mugs! A Rug Making Workshop

Join Juliet King of Hijinx Mixed Media to make your own one-of-a-kind rug coaster! This workshop will explore Juliet’s favorite form of fiber art–punch needle rug tufting. Juliet will provide background information and a demonstration of rug hand-punching method.  Each participant will have a selection of yarns to work from with experienced artist Juliet King. Using the yarn, colors, and design provided, the goal is for each participant to come away from this workshop with experience in rug making with a punch method.  You may choose to use a simple design provided or bring your own for more variety.  Embroidery hoops and needles will be available to use during the workshop.

Things to consider when rug-making for you to think about in preparation and will be discussed at the workshop:
● Text is difficult, especially with small rugs
● Big & bold graphics work best
● Intricate detail will likely get lost
● Consider what kind of yarn is best for each project
● Is your rug for touching or just for looking?

This 2-hour workshop is ideal for intermediate to advanced crafters and is open to ages 16+.

Space is limited and registration is required. Both October workshops are the same content; please select just one to register for. Registration opens 2 weeks in advance (Sept. 19, 2024).

About the instructor:

Juliet (she/they) founded Hijinx Mixed Media as a way to spread joy and laughter through art. Using humor, my art aims to accessibly explore difficult topics like humanity's impact on the planet, loneliness and community, or reminders of death (memento mori). Navigating the world as a mixed race queer artist, I hope to encourage community, solidarity, and resistance.  Learn more about Juliet's art at hijinxmixedmedia.com / IG & TikTok @hijinx.mixed

Thursday, Oct 3, 2024, 6:30pm to 8:00pm

Join us for a book group discussion of "Daisy Darker" by Alice Feeney. Books are available at the library. New members always welcome!

"Daisy Darker was born with a broken heart. Now after years of avoiding each other, Daisy Darker’s entire family is assembling for Nana’s 80th birthday party in her crumbling gothic house on a tiny tidal island. The family arrives, each of them harboring secrets. When the tide comes in, they will be cut off from the rest of the world for eight hours.

But at the stroke of midnight, as a storm rages, Nana is found dead. And an hour later, the next family member follows…

Trapped on an island where someone is killing them one by one, the Darkers must reckon with their present mystery as well as their past secrets, before the tide goes out and all is revealed. As seen on the TODAY show and picked by Book of the Month, Daisy Darker's family secrets and Alice Feeney's trademark shocking twists will keep readers riveted." -- Amazon.com
