The Lion Dance with Zhong Yi Kung Fu Association

The Lion Dance with Zhong Yi Kung Fu Association

Community Room
Saturday, Oct 5, 2024, 9:15am to 11:00am

Join Zhong Yi Kung Fu Association as they perform The Lion Dance at Alicia Ashman Library. Traditionally, during holidays such as Chinese New Year or Mid-Autumn festival, Lion Dance Troupes will visit various establishments throughout the community to perform the traditional custom of "Cai Qing" (採青) or "Plucking the Greens". Like a curious cat, the lion dances over to the green and red envelope or “Hóngbāo” (紅包), which contains money, and eats the green. Once the green is transformed into good fortune, the lion spits it out, keeping the red envelope. The lion dance is believed to bring good luck and fortune to all the places they visit.

Bring the kids early at 9:15a.m. for a story time and craft that celebrates the cultural significance and traditions of the Mid-Autumn or Moon Festival, a major holiday in Asia, presented by the Verona Area International School (VAIS).

All are welcome and no registration is required. Come and enjoy this exciting event for the whole family!

Saturday October 5th, 11am-12pm: DB Orchestra

The DB Orchestra is lively, loud, local, and one of the hottest bands in Madison! Led by Andy Kerber, this group combines the nuanced harmonies of a Doo-Wop group, the intensity of a marching band, and the flair of great jazz ensembles of yesteryear. The DBO sets the stage for an infectiously fun and uniquely electric live performance. Expect to hear everything from timeless swinging hits from the 1930s and ’40s, rock ‘n’ roll classics, show tune medleys, and even some tracks on the radio today. The hot horns, smooth saxes, and driving drums of the DB Orchestra will keep your head humming and toes tapping long after the show’s over!
