Join members of the Feminist Bird Club - Madison Chapter to learn about ducks, geese, and other migrating waterfowl that are arriving in the Madison area for fall migration. We'll explore the ponds at Nine Springs to identify several species of ducks and discuss tips and tricks about how to identify each species. Binoculars will be provided and there will be scopes to allow you to get better views of birds too. This is a great option for those interested in getting started with birding or anyone wanting to practice their waterfowl ID skills. This outing is family friendly! 

• Location: Nine Springs Natural Area (1947 Moorland Rd)
• Parking and Accessibility: There is a paved parking lot at 1947 Moorland Rd where we will meet. There is a restroom at the parking lot, but it is possible it may be closed for the season. We will walk from the parking lot along the bike path to reach the entrance to the ponds. There is one very short, small incline on a dirt path to reach the pond area, but otherwise the terrain is entirely flat. We anticipate walking roughly 1.5 miles at a slow pace, stopping frequently to stop and scan the ponds for birds. 

Space is limited for this event; registration is required. This program is currently full. Please use the contact your local library to be added to the wait list. 

About the Presenter

The Feminist Bird Club is a birdwatching club dedicated to promoting inclusivity in birding while fundraising and providing a safe opportunity for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, BIPOC, and women to connect with the natural world. The Madison chapter was founded in 2019 and offers monthly outings that are open to everyone who supports their mission, no birding experience required! 

Are you a kid who loves LEGOs? Do you enjoy engineering and designing LEGO creations?  If that is you - come join us for LEGO Club! The library will provide lots of LEGOs, and you provide the imagination. No registration required. LEGOs will have to stay at the library, so bring a camera to capture your creations.

Curious about podcasting?

Join us for a demo of the Library Podcasting Kit and learn about the basics of recording and sound editing. We will work on a small recording project in teams. The kit is compatible with PC or Apple laptops - you can bring your own or use a library laptop.  Registration required.

Intermediate Students: Practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing English with the Literacy Network.

Fall 2024 classes are September 21 - December 14, Saturdays, 10 am - 12 pm (no class November 30), in-person at Goodman South, Madison Public Library. This class is free for students 18 years old and up living permanently in Dane County. A class for beginner students will be held at Literacy Network at the same time.

Is your Big Bossy missing an ear? Lambie sprung a stuffing leak? Pato the Duck have a hole in his wing? Christina can help you learn to visually mend your most precious stuffed friend with sewing and fabric patches. They will be even more lovable after the repair. Please bring your own stuffed animal. All materials for the most common stuffed animal repair are provided including spare parts, stuffing, patches, and more.

The skills in this class are targeted at adult learners, however, youth participants are welcome to attend with an adult! Registration is required and opens two weeks prior to the event on October 26, 2024.

Join Kimberly Crowley as she demonstrates the process of making Ho-Chunk Black Ash Baskets. Participants will be able to make their own paper basket as well as help make a communal Black Ash Basket for Hawthorne Library to keep and display. Open to all ages. No registration required.

About the presenter: I am Kimberly Crowley, Thunder Clan Member of the Ho-Chunk Nation. I am the 3rd daughter of Sidney Hall Sr. and Christine Hall. I grew up in Wittenberg, Wisconsin with my 10 siblings. I now now reside in Baraboo, Wisconsin with my family, and spend my time making and teaching black ash basket classes. I have 2 granddaughters that I have been teaching and are my apprentices-in-training, Brook had been with me learning basket making for 10 yrs and her sister Ariel is also learning at a young age of 8 yrs old. They both come and assist me during our basket classes, both have made and have baskets along with myself at several museums around Wisconsin. I have been making and selling baskets for over 44 yrs. and just within the last 5 yrs I have been teaching black ash basket making, an art that is slowly dying out.

The Munch Mobile Lunch Van will make a stop at Lakeview Library on Saturdays this fall.  All people in and around the library can get a free lunch between 12:00 and 12:20pm.

Learn about Anishinaabe musical instruments with Dawn and Rob Moneyhan. Included will be hand drums, flutes, and different types of shakers. Participants will have an opportunity to play along and learn how the instruments are made, the history behind them, how they are played, and any other audience questions. Rob Moneyhan, personal flute maker, will explain and show the different stages of making a Native American flute. Dawn will teach a few simple Anishinaabe songs to the audience as everyone learns and sings together. Some of these songs will be water songs, and Dawn will explain the significance and responsibility that Anishinaabe kwewag/women have to the water. All instruments will be provided during the program and MUST be returned to their box at the end of the program.

About the presenter: Dawn Moneyhan is the spiritual leader of The Kwewag Indigenous Culture Church, a newly published author, and teacher of Indigenous history, culture, & tradition. Dawn is also a staunch advocate for Mother Earth and teaches about the climate crisis and the solutions found within Indigenous cultural knowledge and lifestyles. With 30+ years of public speaking and charity work, a career in aquatic medicine, and a deeply held bond with the natural world, Dawn is working hard to effect change in our society to save our planet and ourselves by association. Dawn is always reminding those around her, "We are all connected and the knowledge we seek is buried within us all. It's an ancestral knowledge that every human has within their DNA, buried by hundreds of years of capitalism, religion, and politics. Now is the time to reconnect to the natural world, learn to see life with a new perspective. We have the power to save ourselves if we apply what we know."

Join us to READ and Play together. When children engage with books, songs, and play, they develop communication skills, patience, empathy, and pre-reading skills which helps to build a lifelong love of reading. 

This program is geared toward children under age 5. All older and younger siblings as well as childcare groups are welcome to join.

Library programs are always free.

Join Unidas por Hilos for monthly workshops where a member will teach participants how to prepare a traditional meal, share personal memories associated with the dish, and embroider the recipe on cloth from the tablecloths used during the meals. 

Unidas por Hilos is a community of Latina immigrants, living in Dane county, Wisconsin, who create textile art and community. Their group provides a safe and inclusive space where Latinas connect with each other and share their experiences as immigrants living in the United States.  Through their textile art, they not only showcase their cultural heritage, but also share their stories, struggles, and triumphs. Their group is a testament to the power of community and the resilience of immigrant communities. Although they come from different countries and backgrounds, they are united by their love of art making and shared experiences as immigrants. 

This is a FREE workshop.

Goodman South Madison is excited to begin our Dungeons & Dragons program for youth. While this campaign is currently full, we will happily put people on our waitlist for our next teen & tween campaign. Please email youth librarian, Rachel (rlavender@madisonpubliclibrary.org), for more information and/or to be put on the waitlist. Goodman South Madison Library is also beginning to offer a drop in Dungeons and Dragons program for kids of all ages. Stop by on November 7th and/or 21st from 5pm-7pm to complete a short adventure and learn more about how to play! 

About D&D: Dungeons and Dragons is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game that allows each player to create their own character to play. These characters embark upon imaginary adventures within a fantasy setting. A Dungeon Master (DM) serves as the game's referee and storyteller, while maintaining the setting in which the adventures occur.

The Madison Writing Assistance (MWA) program offers free, one-to-one writing support for community members at library branches throughout the city. Our friendly, experienced writing coaches are happy to help with writing projects across a wide range of genres, including resumes, cover letters, application essays, grant proposals, fiction writing, memoirs, and more.
