Artist-in-Residence Workshop: Learn to Map Your Neighborhood through Collage
Meeting Rooms A and B Combined
Saturday, Nov 16, 2024, 10:00am to 12:00pm
Make a neighborhood map! Join Sequoya Library Artist-in-Residence Stephen Kennedy of LATLONG.SHOP to learn how to construct your own map out of magazine cut outs. He’ll walk through techniques to make a depiction of Madison—your favorite features of the city, your neighborhood, or your daily commute—from your perspective.
Supplies provided, but feel free to bring old magazines if you like their imagery or typography. All ages welcome, but parents are recommended to supervise kids under age 10.
Registration is required and opens two weeks before the program, at 9am on 11/2. Please sign up for either this session or Friday evening's session.
Stephen's show, Atlas of an Isthmus: Creative Cartography of Madison & Beyond, is on display at Sequoya Library September 1-December 31, 2024.

Grief Circle Workshop at Thurber Park Studio
Saturday, Nov 16, 2024, 10:00am to 12:00pm
Come to the Thurber Studio for a physical and emotional take on the classic sewing circle. There will be sewing, conversation around personal and societal experiences of grief, and some physical exercises aimed at finding our supportive center as makers. Due to space limitations we will be focusing on hand sewing. Bringing some of your own materials is encouraged, but not required. All levels of sewing knowledge is welcomed.
This workshop is a part of Hold & Release, a two-year artist residency at Thurber Park Artist Studio, an indoor public park space currently occupied by artist Jennifer Bastian. Her residency is focused on the grief in our world right now. Jennifer shares, "for some it is delayed processing of loss due to the ongoing Covid pandemic and ramp-up back to “normal,” for others it is due to income inequality or racial inequity in a segregated city, others are impacted by the reality of multiple concurrent genocides around the world. I believe we need space to slow down and process our grief. Art can help us access the emotions our daily lives do not leave room for."
Please note: One or more individuals in this small space are immunocompromised. For that reason, we are requesting all attendees kindly mask before entering. Masks are provided on-site if needed.
Learn more here: https://www.madisonbubbler.org/residencies/thurber-park/current This workshop is designed for adults. Ages 16-18 are welcome to join with an adult or guardian. Registration is required and will open 3 weeks prior to the workshop date.
