Welcome to our Community Cinema newsletter. Every month we feature free film screenings that can seen throughout the month at your neighborhood library.

Cinesthesia presents McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971)

  • Thursday, February 1, 6:30-8:45pm at Central Library (Room 302)
“This unorthodox dream western by Robert Altman may be the most radically beautiful film to come out of the New American Cinema…with its fascinating flawed characters, evocative cinematography by the great Vilmos Zsigmond, innovative overlapping dialogue, and haunting use of Leonard Cohen songs...” (Criterion).

Presented by Jason Fuhrman, Cinesthesia shows noteworty art films, neglected masterpieces, and obscure works by famous directors you will probably not see on a big screen elsewhere in Madison. First Thursday of every month.

First Friday Flicks: Battle of the Sexes (2017)

  • Friday, February 2, 6:30-8:30pm at Pinney Library

The 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs became the most watched televised sports event of all time. Trapped in the media glare, King and Riggs were on opposites sides of a binary argument, but off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles.

Seating is first come, first served with space for 50 attendees. Doors open 1/2 hour before the film start time. Light refreshments to be provided by the Friends of Pinney Library.

Friday Night Anime presents...

A wide range of anime genres are shown - primarily titles newly released (or re-released) in the US, with a few classic older titles mixed in. This anime series is for adults and older teens, many of the films are equivalent to an R rating.  All films are shown in Japanese with English subtitles, and refreshments are always served.

Indie Lens Pop-Up presents Tell Them We Are Rising (2017)

  • Thursday, February 8, 6:30-8:45pm at Central Library
Explores the pivotal role historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have played over the course of 150 years in American history, culture, and identity. This film reveals the rich history of HBCUs and the power of higher education to transform lives and advance civil rights and equality in the face of injustice.

Please stay after the film for a discussion with local experts and community leaders.

Indie Lens Pop-Up is a neighborhood series that brings people together for film screenings and community-driven conversations and features documentaries seen on the PBS series Independent Lens. This series is a co-partnership with ITVS, Wisconsin Public Television, and Madison Public Library.

Movies Too Good to Miss presents...

A mix of independent films, foreign feature films, and documentaries.  Suggestions for future screenings are welcome. All foreign films are shown in original language, with English subtitles as needed. Refreshments are always served.

Film Movement Screening: The Teacher/Ucitelka (2016)

  • Wednesday, February 14, 6:30-8:45pm at Pinney Library
(Slovak w/ English subtitles) A middle school teacher manipulates her student's parents into doing favors for her in exchange for previews of test questions and good grades for their children.

Music and Memory Launch & Screening of Alive Inside (2014)

  • Friday, February 15, 6:30-8pm at Central Library

Join us for this special film screening to learn more about Music & Memory, a nationwide initiative to bring personalized music into the lives of older adults through digital technology.

Music & Memory was founded in 2006 in the Greater New York Area on a simple premise: Using music to improve the lives of those living with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other cognitive and physical challenges by enabling them to reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories. The program has expanded beyond long-term care and into our communities Eight City of Madison public libraries are poised to offer Music & Memory to our patrons.

Pinney’s Nominee Nights Series is back! Please join us as we watch six films/performances that have been nominated this awards season:

Movie Night at Lakeview presents Marshall (2017)

  • Friday, February 16, 6-7:30pm at Lakeview Library
Based on an early trial in the career of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. It follows the young lawyer to conservative Connecticut to defend a black chauffeur charged with sexual assault and attempted murder of his white socialite employer. Muzzled by a segregationist court, Marshall partners with a courageous young Jewish lawyer, Samuel Friedman. Together they mount the defense in an environment of racism and Anti-Semitism.

After Dinner Mints presents Hidden Figures (2016)

  • Friday, February 23, 6:30-8:30pm at Alicia Ashman Library

The story of a team of femail African-American mathematicians who served a vital roal in NASA during the early years of the U.S. Space Program.
