Are you looking for a book that is slightly quirky, and will leave you thinking about it even after you have finished reading? Then Magic Candies by Heena Baek may be just what you have been looking for.
Tong Tong is a boy who plays marbles by himself most of the time. One day he decides he needs some new marbles. He finds some unusual looking ones, but the shopkeeper tells him that they are hard candies, not marbles. Tong Tong tries one and he begins to hear something strange, could it be, the thoughts of his sofa? Once the candy has melted away, the voice goes away too. The next candy lets him have a conversation with his dog. The reader can't help but wonder who or what the next candy will open Tong Tong up to. Some of the encounters are surprisingly emotional and the end is hopeful.
This picture book is perfect for 5-7 year olds, but I think it would be a great opening to get older children thinking and maybe writing about who or what they might like to have a magic candy experience with. I can't help but wonder what my sofa might have to tell me.
