Shara Wheeler has been Chloe Green's nemesis for years. She's perfect, everyone loves her, and she is Chloe's only competition for valedictorian. So when Shara kisses Chloe in an elevator and then vanishes in the middle of prom a few days later, Chloe knows something is up. She teams up with Shara's boyfriend (on the surface, a typical jock) and Shara's next door neighbor who, surprise surprise, was also kissed by Shara Wheeler before her disappearance, and the unlikely trio begin a quest full of secret clues, puzzles, and daring acts that push them all out of their comfort zones.
As a fan of Casey McQuiston's other books and a huge YA reader, I was really excited for her first teen book and I was not disappointed. This book had just enough familiar plot twists for me to feel satisfied in my predictions, and just enough surprising ones that even genre savvy readers will be kept on their toes. I enjoyed following along with the mystery, but what delighted me the most is how the end of the book was unexpected, challenged some of my own biases, and made me think a little deeper.
