When she was an adventurous child Theodora "Dora" Ettings ran afoul of a faerie lord and seems to have been cursed by him. Ever since then all her emotions have been muted and she barely feels anything. While growing up with her cousin Vanessa, in the country, Dora's oddities could be kept from the view of the rest of society. But when it's decided to bring Vanessa out during the London Season, and Vanessa insists Dora accompany her, Dora is suddenly exposed to so many more people. And though she hopes to be an unseen bystander during her cousin's season, an encounter with the King's Magician, Elias Wilder, makes social invisibility impossible. But being noticed by the Lord Sorcier may not be all bad. For one, Vanessa hopes he may be able to dispel Dora's curse, and for two, the man manages to bring out more emotion in Dora than she's experienced in a long time. As the two pursue a solution for Dora and investigate a sleeping sickness affecting orphan children in London, Dora will have to confront her own desires and decide just what she'll risk for love.
There's humor and heart in Dora and Elias' journey and I loved all of it. Think Bridgerton blended with the cozy fantasy of Legends and Lattes. I look forward to the next in the series, Ten Thousand Stitches.
