Central Library Goes Green
The new Central Library went through a rigorous planning process which included extensive reuse of building materials, a complete upgrade and redesign through improvements to the heating, ventilation and air condition (HVAC) systems in the library, and inclusion of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) design standards. The building achieved LEED Gold certification - the second highest ranking for sustainable buildings - on July 25, 2014.
The final building incorporates natural and energy efficient lighting, efficiencies in heating, cooling and wastewater management, recycled and locally sourced materials, a green roof, solar energy, and even recycled art! Green Energy
Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) has partnered extensively with the Library to provide their customers with energy efficiency information. Learn more about this partnership on their website. You can even check out a Portable Energy Meter from the Library! In 2008, MG&E made a major financial contribution through the City of Madison for demonstration of energy-efficiency technology at the Sequoya Library.
Our most recent collaboration is the Greening Our World list of books and videos donated to Madison Public Library by MG&E.
