Highs and lows of the dance

Cover of The Favorites
A review of The Favorites by Layne Fargo

"To the world, they were a scandal. To each other, an obsession."

That's the first line of the blurb for this epic love story that takes it's inspiration from Wuthering Heights. Here instead of wandering the moors, the lovers glide across the ice in the competitive (some would say cut-throat) world of Olympic-level ice dancing.

Kat Shaw and Heath Rocha have felt a connection with one another from the moment they meet. And while Kat loves Heath, her more abiding passion has been figure skating. Kat plans to compete professionally and she's bringing Heath along for the journey. Their work together in the sport of ice dancing takes them to a training school in Los Angeles run by a former champion Sheila Lin. It is there they first meet the pair who will become their biggest competition and their biggest emotional challenge. As the two pairs fight for supremacy, their lives overlap and intertwine in increasingly complicated ways. All of which may lead to disaster.

If you'd like a complex, dramatic, character-driven story (some might say melodramatic, but I was here for it) to start off the new year, you can't go wrong in choosing this one.
