This is your chance to dive into the mind of author Keanu Reeves! What's going on in there? Well, I'm not sure after reading the first volume in his Brzrkr series but I can tell you his comic debut is the most unapologetically violent thing I've ever read.
The main character, known simply as B., is half-mortal and half-god and one hundred percent berserk. Created as a killing machine, B. fights and fights and fights with no end in sight. His sanity is compromised by the ongoing cycle of violence worldwide and his inability to end it. He's cursed and compelled to violence at the same time. During his never-ending time wandering Earth, B. connects with government intelligence from an unidentified American agency. He endures experiments and missions with the hope that his memories will be restored. I need to know what happens next, so I'm reading Brzrkr Volume 2 and unless something truly heinous happens, I'll stick with the series to completion. The final volume 3 is expected in 2023.
There are some items of note that I want to share with you about this series. First, this series was originally funded through a Kickstarter campaign. That's interesting, right? Second, there's a lot of emotion to be found in Brzrkr. Imagine what's it's like to be naturally compelled to violence while witnessing the violence of humans toward each other from the beginning of time and for all time. That's a distinct kind of torture. The violence of humans perpetrated against each other just never ends. No wonder poor B. is beside himself. Next, the character of B. looks like Keanu Reeves to me. Exactly like Keanu Reeves. And finally, Netflix announced it was developing a live-action film adaptation and an anime series based on the comics with Reeves cast as the lead.
