“Once upon a time in Tulsa…” Gorgeous illustrations and detailed text share the incredible richness of Greenwood - thriving businesses, incredible schools, Black-owned newspapers, bustling beauty salons, libraries, doctors, movie theaters, and more - as well as the horror and tragedy of the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. This is a clear, powerful introduction, inviting readers to learn more, and ending with a look at Reconciliation Park in Tulsa, a “place to realize the responsibility we all have to reject hatred and violence and to instead choose hope."

The author and illustrator notes include more history than I ever learned in school, as well as historical photographs, and I’m glad to have this title to share with children in my life. For more award/honor books to check out, take a look at the full list of honorees
