Travel via literary and musical worlds

Cover of The Summer We Crossed Euro
A review of The Summer We Crossed Europe in the Rain by Kazuo Ishiguro
Bianca Bagnarelli

This book celebrates summer in an unexpected and inviting way. Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro creates a thematic collection of yearning, love, sadness and the other-worldliness of travel in a graphic novel comprised of lyrics written for Grammy-nominated jazz singer Stacey Kent. Who knew that the author of The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go honed his literary skills writing lyrics as a young man? He explains it all in the introduction.

Illustrated by Italian artist Bianca Bagnarelli and set to a play list featuring Stacey Kent singing with songbook by Jim Tomlinson, the publisher describes the book as an exploration of the notion of collaboration and interpretation. You can read and listen at the same time. The play list is available by scanning a QR code at the end of the book or by searching the title of the book in YouTube or Spotify. This provides an experience so beyond everyday reading, I am at a loss for words, other than to say, check this book out. It's romantic and sad, and if you're longing for travel, reading this will transport you.
