Wrestling with the past

Cover of Think of Me
A review of Think of Me by Frances Liardet

This historical fiction novel takes place between 1943 and 1974 beginning in Alexandria, Egypt, and ending in a small English village. It is a well written story told in alternating voices by James, a former RAF pilot and prisoner of WWII, and his wife, Yvette.

After the war, James and Yvette are married and he becomes an ordained Vicar of the Anglican Church. When the story opens, James has moved to a small village parish ten years after Yvette’s death. Their son recently started college across the country and James is ready for a fresh start in a new parish. As the story develops, it becomes clear that James is wrestling with events from his past. Fortunately for the reader, Yvette has left behind several journals that give us insight into her side of the story and help us to understand the events that led to James’s current state.

I’m a fan of stories set during WWII and Think of Me did not disappoint. The characters are well developed and likable and the various settings and events were described vividly. Though the couple’s love story was at the center, there was depth beyond their romance that kept me turning the pages.
