Fidelis, a German immigrant, butcher and World War I survivor, immigrates to the small village of Argus, North Dakota to rebuild his life with his new bride Eva, the pregnant widow of his best friend.   Waiting there is Delphine Watzka, vaudeville performer and unhappy wife, whose friendship and eventual love for Eva and Fidelis has consequences felt through times of war and peace.
