Frequently Asked Questions : Rentals

What's the difference between a Rental & a Community Group?

Rentals are for those groups which are intended to be closed or for those outside our service area. These may include business meetings, board meetings, parties, or other activities intended just for the members of your group.

Can I ask attendees for donations or sell tickets to cover the cost of the room?

The Madison Public Library does not book events that charge admission, solicit donations, or advertise businesses or for-profit services. Some exceptions for book sellers may apply.

Can I have my event in a Branch Library?

Due to capacity, the Central Library is the only Library able to take Rentals.  Our Branch Libraries are reserved for Library Programming and Community Groups.

Do you have a non-profit rate?

Yes! Beginning in 2026 we will be offering non profit rates for 501c3 organizations.  Let the Events Team know you are interested in finding out more.

Do I have to use the catering list?

No! While our catering list is extensive and our catering partners have already been trained to use our facilities, we do have a process to bring in other catering.  However all food being shared must be prepared in a commercial kitchen. We do not allow pot lucks or home cooked food.

My event doesn't fit in any of the packages, can I still book?

Of course! Our Events Team will work with you to find the best fit.

Does the Library have linens, plates, cutlery?

We do not provide any linens or utensils.  Your caterer will sometimes be able to provide these for you or you can try the corner market down the street from the Library.

Does the Library have parking?

Metered street parking is available as well as several downtown parking garages.  The closest parking garage to the Central Library is the Overture Parking Ramp.
