Atlas is defined by Merriam-Webster as:
1. capitalized: a Titan who for his part in the Titan's revolt against the gods is forced by Zeus to support the heavens on his shoulders
2. capitalized: one who bears a heavy burden, and
3(a): a bound collection of maps often including illustrations, informative tables, or textual matter.
Black Girl You Are Atlas uses the word Atlas/atlas in all three ways to describe Black girlhood with a variety of poetic forms including haiku, free verse and a tanka for Michelle Obama. The poems are semi-autobiographical and cover the geographic upbringing of author Renée Watson, specific years in her life, and a roadmap for herself and others on growing up. It's a beautiful book and meant to be savored. I found myself reading the poems multiple times and then going back again to savor the exceptional artwork.
The art for this book was selected from the collages of Ekua Holmes and includes two pieces done specifically for this book. The vibrant, full-color mixed media pieces include cut and torn papers that were found, created, painted, and prepared, along with photos and drawings. The resulting book is a treasure.
Black Girl You Are Atlas is a Coretta Scott King Author Honor book and Odyssey Honor Audiobook and winner of the Walter Dean Myers Award. Read more about all the 2025 ALA Youth Media Award Winners here.
